The Alleghany County office of Virginia Cooperative Extension is your local connection to Virginia's land-grant universities, Virginia Tech and Virginia State University.

Through educational programs based on research and developed with input from local stakeholders, we help the people of Alleghany County improve their lives.

We provide education through programs in Agriculture and Natural Resources, Family and Consumer Sciences, 4-H Youth Development, and Community Viability.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING THIS SUMMER?

There’s no better place in the world to discover new interests and new friends this summer than at the Skelton 4-H Center! Alleghany, Bath, Highland, and Rockbridge Staff are planning some great events to celebrate summer! Bring along some friends for a fun-filled week of classes including Robotics, Swimming, Fishing, Canoeing, Kayaking, Archery, Riflery, Performing Arts, Dance, Climbing, Video Production, Outdoor Living Skills, Horsemanship, Black Powder, Ceramics, Small Animals, Basketball, Soccer, Cooking, and Computers. Packs will compete in activities throughout the week. Room inspection, theme night activities, water and field olympics, and other fun-filled activities will decide the winner of the Thursday night ice cream sundae party.

You're Invited -- Conversations on Poverty

On Saturday, July 18, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Virginians will have a unique opportunity to pitch their solutions for reducing poverty in their localities and statewide. In one of the largest-ever, simultaneous conversations devoted to the issue of poverty reduction, attendees are encouraged to recommend specific strategies for the Commonwealth’s Poverty Reduction Taskforce and local and state officials to consider.
