4-H Honor Club

On May 23, 2011 the Honor Club held our monthly meeting at the Extension Office at 7:00 pm. The meeting was called to order by president Cole Boylen, the minutes were read by Kerri Houser and the treasurers report was given by Tyler Maddox. Next, the club’s new adult leaders, Mr. and Mrs. Salatin, were introduced to the club. All members were very grateful that they volunteered for the challenging task of leading the club.

Discussion then moved to old business. A brief overview was given of the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner which was held back in April. Members all said they had fun and thought the dinner was a success. Members then expressed their thoughts about the 4-H turnout at the Board of Supervisors meeting. Everyone thought 4-H was represented fantastically and that our ideas and thoughts were well received. A few words were also said about the Market Animal Show. Discussion of old business was concluded with talk of the club’s annual picnic. Details, such as food assignments, were ironed out and final arrangements were made.

New business followed with planning for the Augusta County Fair petting zoo. Members were assigned tasks, such as finding animals and supplies, and also signed up for timeslots to work the zoo.

After finalizing petting zoo assignments the meeting was adjourned.

The 4-H Honor Club held their monthly meeting at the Extension Office on Monday, January 24, 2012.

The club voted to send a donation to two Chesterfield County teens who were injured in an automobile accident. Club members will lead the Presentations and Public Speaking Contest on February 3rd at the Government Center. Some members plan to participate as well. Club members will also lead the Share the Fun auditions on February 16th and the contest as well on March 2. These events will be held in the Great Hall at Memorial Baptist Church in Staunton.

Besides these events, the club will hold its annual etiquette training and dinner at the Joshua Wilton House. The social director will give more details as they become available.

As a public service project, the club plans to help the Parks & Rec department with the county Easter Egg Hunt which will be held at Wilson Memorial High School on March 31st.

Our program for the evening was presented by Mrs. Rebecca Moyer of the 4-H International Exchange Program.  She talked about how as a nation, we need to be more globally connected with the world. The 4-H International Exchange does just that by giving young people a chance to travel abroad and also hosting international students.

We have two honorary members, Kristina Poghosyan (Armenia) and Haruna Jinkawa (Japan) who both gave a presentation on their country and their experiences in America.

High School students coming in to the United States stay with a host family for a year and attend the public high school. Outbound students from the U.S. have a month long exchange during the summer.

The meeting was then adjourned.
