Nature Nuts 4-H Club News
The Nature Nuts met on October 13th at the Staunton Alliance Church. Our first order of business was to elect officers for the new year. New officers are encouraged to attend the 4-H Officer Training on November 3rd at the Government Center.
The rest of the meeting was devoted to making molds of wild animal footprints. We had fun using the plaster of paris.
Nature Nuts meets every 2nd Tuesday of every month. New members are always welcome.

The Nature Nuts 4-H Club held their monthly meeting, November 10th at the Staunton Alliance Church.
Items discussed were upcoming events such as our community service project. We plan to ring the bells for the Salvation Army at the Kroger Store on November 14th.
Members are encouraged to attend the Achievement Night on December 5th to honor all 4-H accomplishments for the past year. It was also noted about the upcoming Natural Resources Weekend which will be held at Holiday Lake 4-H Center in January.
Heidi Salatin of the 4-H Honor club presented part of the program by teaching us “ice breaker” games. It was a fun way to get to know new members and learn about each other. Mrs. Lightner gave us a presentation on contrasts, edges and layering in relation to Natural Resources and we also completed pages in our workbook.
The Nature Nuts 4-H Club held their monthly meeting on January 12, 2010 at Staunton Alliance Church.
Business items included the discussion about Natural Resources Weekend which was held on January 23-24 at Holiday Lake 4-H Center in Appomattox. We also discussed the Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program (WHEP) in which some members planned to participate. Other important activities include the Presentation Contest on February 26 at the Augusta County Government Center.
In our wildlife workbook we learned about wildlife populations and carrying capacity. The carrying capacity of a biological species in an environment is the population size of the species that the environment can sustain indefinitely, given the food, habitat, water and other necessities available in the environment.
The Nature Nuts 4-H club held their monthly meeting on March 9 at the Staunton Alliance Church. Club members are involved in some spring events. One such event is State Contest for Wildlife Habatit Evaluation Program which will be held in Elkton on April 3rd. Also members plan to participate in the Grouse Society tree planting on March 20th. This will be an all day event.
During our meeting we learned about animals such as the Eastern Cotton Tail rabbit.
Our next meeting will be held on April 13th at Staunton Alliance Church.

The club voted to pay $35 to each senior 4-H member who will be attending 4-H Forestry Camp.
Some of our club members will be attending the Northwest District Contest on April 24th in Lexington. Good Luck!
For our program, we learned how to talk in front of people and do “Impromptu” speeches.
Our next meeting is scheduled for May 11th. New members are always welcome.
The Nature Nuts 4-H Club held their monthly meeting on May 12th at Staunton Alliance Church.
4-H’ers who participated in the Northwest District 4-H Contest in Lexington shared their experiences with other club members. We also talked about the do’s and dont’s of public speaking.
Our educational program was centered around the different kind of animal shelters.
Members are encouraged to attend next month’s meeting on June 8th, when we have a U. S. Forest Ranger coming to present the program.

We learned more about public speaking skills and practiced some techniques.
For our educational program, we learned about forest fires. Our speaker was Forest Service Ranger Pat Sheridan. He is a ranger on the George Washington/Jefferson National Forest.
Three senior 4-H’ers from our club will be attending forestry camp at Holiday Lake 4-H Educational Center in Appomattox in June.

Members discussed upcoming events such as the Augusta County Fair which will be held on August 10-14.
The club also decided to accept the invitation to participate in the Canada Geese tagging. The tagging provides important information to help scientists know the overall condition of the birds, the number in the flock and their nesting preferences.
Mark and Meredith Persinger participated in the Forestry Camp held this summer. The first meeting of the new 4-H year will be held on October 12th. Visitors and new members are always welcome.

Business Discussed: A committee was formed to create a fundraiser to help off-set the cost of members going to the 4-H Natural Resources Weekend in January. We decided to participate in the Stewardship Virginia Acorn Collection as individual families.
Upcoming Club Events and Important Dates Discussed: The upcoming 4-H Achievement Night Awards Banquet will be held on Saturday, Nov. 20 at Memorial Baptist Church. Virginia 4-H Natural Resources weekend will be held Jan. 22-23 at Holiday Lake Center, Appomattox, VA.
Educational Program: Our speaker was Mr. David Kocka, District Wildlife Biologist for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Mr. Kocka gave a very informative talk and power point about bears. Presentations were also given by club President, Sarah Anne Allen about Fisher Cats and club Vice President, Gavin Blake, about Venomous Snakes and Their Lookalikes.

Date, Time and Place of Next Meeting: The next meeting will be held at club Organizational Leader, Sara Lightner’s house on December 14th at 7:00 pm. We will be stargazing and sharing Christmas treats.
