Extension Volunteer Master Gardeners
Extension Volunteer Master Gardeners are an invaluable asset to the local Extension program. This is particularly evident in Bedford County where residential growth is expanding rapidly. The development of a local training program for new volunteers and the dedication of veteran Master Gardeners have facilitated a rapid expansion of this group over the past several years to include 44 trained Master Gardeners. As a result, volunteer contributions to enhance the local Extension program are substantial.
In 2008, Extension Master Gardeners contributed 3,797 hours of volunteer time valued at $74,000.00 to the Bedford community. Examples include the offering of three gardening workshops attended by an average of 50 citizens, staffing the Help Desk at the Extension office on a daily basis during the growing season, speaking to civic groups and providing information booths at various community events.
The Bedford Extension Office provides on-going educational support and management oversight to this valuable volunteer group.
