Virginia Cooperative Extension Celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the Smith-Lever Act

Join Virginia Cooperative Extension as it celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Smith-Lever Act, which officially established the National Cooperative Extension System. Activities are being planned throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia to commemorate the centennial in 2014. Events will be held in local communities, recognition of our Extension volunteers, and even a Virginia Cooperative Extension Day on May 8! 2nd Annual Botetourt County Fair at the Fairgrounds, Lowe Street, Buchanan, VA  

Friday, August 8, 2014  .  Fair kick-off  Friday evening with a 9:00 pm outdoor FREE showing of "The Green Promise",  a 1949 classic movie that highlights agriculture and 4-H in that era  . Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and join us at the Buchanan Town Park for a FREE movie on the lawn  .  Popcorn available for purchase 

Saturday, August 9, 2014  .  Open to public 9:00 am - 4:00 pm  .   Admission Free  .  Local entertainment and by 4-H youth from Botetourt's 4-H Share the fun talent show .  4-H and FFA Youth Livestock shows   .  Agriculture Demonstrations   .   Farm Tractor driving contest (with a Ladies division)   .  Traditional fair contests (baked/canned goods, wood working, needlework/sewing/quilting, produce, photography, and eggs)   .  Local food expo with numerous vendors .  Poultry auction   .   and more!   .   Concessions will be available   

Have you been told you have the best pie in Botetourt County?  The sweetest jam in Virginia?  Or the best pickles anyone has ever tasted? Bring them down to the fair and let them speak for themselves. Entries for our contests will be accepted the evening of Friday, August 8, 2014 at the fairgrounds between 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm. Exhibits will be judged Saturday morning and left on display throughout the day Saturday. See rules regulations and list of competitions link below.
