4-H Day at the Capitol
Botetourt 4-H members traveled to Richmond, VA, February 11, 2014, to participate in "4-H Day at the Capitol" along with approximately 800 fellow 4-H'ers, volunteers, faculty and staff members. Members began their morning with a visit to 19th District Delegate and Botetourt County's own Terry Austin. Botetourt 4-H'ers joined other youth from Alleghany and Bedford counties as Austin shared highlights from his time in office, along with events from a typical day as a delegate in the Virginia House. He answered questions, listened to 4-H'ers share about their experiences in 4-H, and explained how bills are discussed, debated and voted on during a House session. Austin was presented with a Shamrock plant, provided by the State 4-H office, on behalf of all 4-H'ers from the 19th District and thanked for his support of 4-H. 4-H'ers were able to sit in the gallery and view the House in session where they witnessed debating of bills and delegate voting process. Following lunch in the General Assembly building, members enjoyed a personal tour of the Virginia Capitol given by Austin. The day was concluded with a tour of Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services headquarters and a beekeeping update from VDACS apiarist, Keith Tignor.
This educational and informative day provided Botetourt County 4-H'ers with a bird's eye view of how Virginia government is run and operated, as well as a reveiw of the history behind the State Legislature.
Botetourt 4-H programs are open to any youth ages 9 - 19 as of September 30th of the current year. For more information or to enroll, contact Katherine E. Carter, 4-H Agent, firstname.lastname@example.org or (540)473-8260.
