The primary responsibility of the 4-H Agent in Brunswick County is to recruit and train adult volunteers to work with youth to gain life skills through non-formal educational experiences. Major delivery modes in Brunswick include in-school programming, after-school programming, 4-H project clubs and camping. Since 2005, the in-school 4-H program has impacted 800 students by delivering food, nutrition and health education. 4-H has partnered with the public schools for the past 5 years and delivered after-school and summer enrichment programs through a series of 21st Century Learning Center Grants. Topics included food and nutrition, agriculture awareness, natural resources and environmental education. Project clubs in the areas of Horse, Livestock and Shooting Sports reach hundreds of youth each year. 4-H camping activities (week-long residential camps and weekend camps) remain the most popular and effective delivery mode. Over the past 5 years, an average of 100 Brunswick youth, teens and adult volunteers have attended Junior 4-H Camp each year.
Brunswick 4-H has been successful in securing funds to support the above delivery modes. Annually, donations, sponsors and grants total over $10,000.
In addition to responsibilities as the 4-H Agent in Brunswick County, I also serve as the Coordinator for the VA 4-H Shooting Education Program. I work with the VA 4-H Shooting Education Council through quarterly meetings to plan, implement and evaluate instructor certifications for adults in addition to state-wide shooting competitions and shooting camps for youth.
