Family and Consumer Sciences

The family unit is the cornerstone of a healthy community.  Family and Consumer Sciences programs provide families with research-based knowledge designed to improve wellness through positive changes.  There are many aspects of overall wellness including   nutrition and health, personal finance, and human development at all ages.  Through a holistic approach, Family and Consumer Science (FCS) Extension agents, program assistants, and trained Master Volunteers provide education that ensures Virginia families have every piece of the puzzle to be healthy and whole. 

A Vision for a Stronger Commonwealth

FCS programming is driven by the needs of the community---identified by Caroline County residents.  Our FCS Extension Educators work closely with families – in their community, workplace, and home – and with the professionals that serve them.  Pegi Wright is the FCS Extension Agent in Caroline County.

Television and other electronic media are major forms of entertainment for children. Researchers found that the total time spent with electronic media by children ages 2 to 18 was five and a half hours each day (three and a half hours with television). Electronic media includes television, music, computer use, movies, and video games. In one study 75 percent of children 12 to 19 years old spent 6 hours a week watching music videos...  Kids Food and Electronic  .

Exploring nature is a complete sensory experience, and early experiences with the natural world have been positively linked with the development of children's imaginations and their senses of wonder and curiosity—important motivators for lifelong learning.   On December 14, 2011, Virginia Cooperative Extension and Virginia Department of Forestry will offer Project Learning Tree’s Environmental  Experiences for Early Childhood from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the King George YMCA more
