4-H Youth Development

4-H is the youth development education program of Virginia Cooperative Extension.  4-H is committed to assisting youth (and those adults working with them) to acquire the knowledge, life skills, and attitudes that will enable them to become self-directing, contributing, and productive members of society.  The central theme of 4-H education is "learn by doing."

4-H youth clubs reflect the diverse interests of their members.  Youth are given opportunities to explore such topics as Pet Care, GPS Technology, LEGO Robotics, Rocketry, Teen Leadership, Fishing and Shooting Sports, Woodworking, Livestock Care and Showing, Beef Ambassador, and Horse Science.

Youth ages 9 to 13 can attend Junior 4-H Camp and teens ages 14 to 19 serve as Teen Counselors at camp.  Youth can compete in contests at the county and district levels.  Senior winners at the district level may then compete at State 4-H Congress held annually at the Virginia Tech campus.  A Cloverbud Club for younger members (ages 5 to 8) meets during summer months at the Craig County Child Care Center.

The whole family can get involved with 4-H.  Youth (9 to 19) can join and parents can serve as volunteers for community clubs.  Contact the Craig County Extension Office (540/864-5812) for information about becoming a member or a volunteer.
