What's Going On With 4-H?
4-H Camping Program
4-H Junior Camp is open to any child age 9-13 and is held annually at the W.E. Skelton Educational Conference Center at Smith Mountain Lake in Franklin Co. The overnight camp takes place over 5 days and 4 nights and the fee includes lodging, travel (to and from camp), supplies and a camp t-shirt. While at camp, these children are active from sun up to sun down. They will participate in activities such as swimming, performing arts, dance, cheerleading, forensic and computer sciences, soccer, basketball, camp fire activities, and so much more. The Aspiring Ladies of GLH Johnson (2007-2008)
The Leadership Academy is comprised of 83 5th Grade girls at GLH Johnson Elementary. The group is organized and headed by 6 adult leaders. Tadashi designed a two-year program geared toward leadership training that included topics such as, Nutrition and Health, the roles of leaders, leadership styles, being a female leader, financial management and entrepreneurship.
W.W. Moore Educational Center Career and Entrepreneurship Club (2009)
W.W. Moore Educational Center Career and Entrepreneurship Club has 20 students, 9 adult volunteers, and 1 club leader. Topics discussed in this club are: Career paths, resume writing, and performing mock interviews to help develop interview skills.
4-H Teen Leadership Club (2007-Present)
The 4-H Teen Leadership Club has 15 teen volunteers, 6 parent volunteers, and 1 club leader. Usually, the members of this club are campers who have gone to camp as a Counselors-In-Training (CIT) and are planning to return the following year as a Teen Counselor Volunteer. Members of this club attend monthly meetings and receive extensive training before going to camp as a counselor. Some of the training sessions are overnight so that the teen will have the experience before going to camp. This program also helps the teen to develop decision making capabilities, along with leadership skills. Involving these teens in various community projects to help develop a sense of positive contribution is also a part of their requirements.
Camp Grove Association Gardening Club (2008-2009)
Camp Grove Association Gardening Club is designed to teach youth basic gardening skills and develop a community garden in their neighborhood. The program will consist of neighborhood youth residing from the Camp Grove area. For many youth, the Gardening club will serves as a foundation for youth to get the opportunity to participate in hands-on, experiential learning opportunities that are critical for development of various skills.
