Through educational programs based on research and developed with input from local stakeholders, we help the people of Essex County improve their lives.

We provide education through programs in Agriculture and Natural Resources, Family and Consumer Sciences, 4-H Youth Development, and Community Viability.

Virginia Cooperative Extension takes pride in the premise that vital programming is based on the issues, problems, and needs of the people. A thorough analysis of the situation provides context for understanding and addressing these problems. Each local office updates their situation analysis every 4-5 years.

Language Interpretation Services Now Available

If you have limited English skills, do not let that stop you from visiting an Extension office. If you have difficulty speaking or understanding English, our staff can serve you by connecting you to one of our Extension agents through a telephone-based interpreter. Interpretation for more than 200 languages is provided. This service is free to our clients. Read more

Well Water Clinic

The Essex Unit of Virginia Cooperative Extension will be holding a Household Well Water Clinic for Essex County residents with private water systems during the month of September. The cost is $52 per sample. Results are confidential. Clinic includes education on well water management and contaminants. Samples will be tested for Lead, Sodium, pH, Arsenic, Nitrates, harmful bacteria such as E. coli, and eight other contaminants. There may be scholarships available to help with costs. 2015 Virginia On-Farm Corn Test Plots

The research and demonstration plots discussed in this publication are a cooperative effort by eight Virginia Cooperative Extension employees, a faculty member at Virginia State University, numerous producers, and many members of the agribusiness community. The field work and printing of this publication are mainly supported by the Virginia Corn Check- Off Fund through the Virginia Corn Board. Anyone who would like a copy should contact their local extension agent, who can request a copy from the Essex County Extension office.
