PEST-MANAGEMENT

Stink Bugs:  What to do!

Is your property being invaded by a little brown critter known as a “Stink Bug”?
Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs are back in force this September in Frederick County.
This time of year, this Asian species is seeking a “wintering” place. Frederick County Extension Agency can provide information for managing this pest.

Here are some helpful tips:

Laura Shifflett, our Horticultural Associate recommends using a Pyrithrium based insecticide.  Carefully follow the directions on the label and please note it is toxic to honey bees and aquatics.

Home Remedies:  Make sure your window and doors are caulked properly and no holes in your screens.  Use two-sided tape around doors and any area where they are congregating.  Sticky yellow fly traps are also an attraction for them.  Mixing dish soap with water in a spray bottle or a pail of water they can be scooped in also will help get rid of them.  Remember not to crush them, as the scent they release will draw more bugs to the area.

For information please call Frederick County Extension Office at 540-665-5699.
