4-H Youth Development

Programs

Charles Lytton is the 4-H, Youth Development Agent for Giles County.  In Giles County, there are three Elementary Schools and two High Schools.  Charles does “in school” programming in all Giles County Schools.  He presents teacher workshops on a variety of topics.

Summer Programs and Camps

Summer 4-H Camp is held at the W.E. Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center in Wirtz, Va.  Giles County joins Craig, Floyd and Montgomery counties for a week of fun at the camp.

Summer Day camps are also offered.  In the last couple of years, youth attended camps featuring

Tree Identification, Forestry, Child Care (Babysitting) and Baking Class.

Programs for the whole family

Every three months, Charles holds a “Midnight Cookout”.  This Astronomy program is usually held at the Mountain Lake Conservancy.  The group spends the evening looking up at the night sky and learning to identify constellations and stars.  Even in the summertime the nights may be chilly and everyone looks forward to going back into the warm building to enjoy a covered dish dinner.

Participants lie on blankets and look at the night sky.  The sky was clear and cold.  There were no city lights up there to obscure the view of the stars.

4-H is a comprehensive youth development program of Virginia Cooperative Extension.  Young people from ages 5 to 18 engage in hands-on learning experiences under the guidance of 4-H agents and trained adult or teen 4-h volunteers.
