The nightly Corn Ear Worm moth count for the week ending August 21 was 36 per night for Gloucester and 32 for Middlesex.  This is yet another increase in numbers since last week.  Producers should be scouting all soybean fields unless those fields have already produced hard seed pods.  I have found a few small worms in some fields but they have not reached threshold levels.  If rains continue, the problem will be minimal.

Like most years, there will be some fields that need it and some that will not, so scouting is important.

You may want to check drought stressed beans first.  Moths tend to fly to fields under stress or with reduced stands.

“Nightly corn earworm moth counts are heading upward.  Average per night is now around 35-40 moths.  Early planted soybeans definitely need scouting.  Double crop soybeans are still not of great concern, but you may want to begin watching them this week also.  If 15 sweeps with a sweep net yields 2-3 corn earworm larvae or more, then an insecticide application is needed.

Do not make applications to soybeans that have not yet bloomed!  Applications too early will possibly warrant another application later.  Check with your supplier for suggested insecticides.”

♦It is time to scout full season soybeans to see what is out there.

♦Early results for the week August 2 through August 7th indicate a pick up for the moth count.
