Pittsylvania County is one of the largest agricultural counties in the state. According to statistics, it ranks 6th in agricultural production. Livestock are an important part of agricultural life in this area. There are an estimated 23,000 head of beef cattle here, ranking the county 6th in the state. The livestock program includes a strong emphasis on Beef Quality Assurance, Virginia Quality Assured feeder calf marketing program, and the Virginia Premium Assured Heifer certification and marketing program. Forages are also an essential part of any good livestock program, so special emphasis is placed on forage production in relation to livestock nutrition and feeding.

In addition, exploration of areas of alternative livestock and crop opportunities has continued and programming related to meat goats, aquaculture, pumpkin production, and equine have been conducted. The Pittsylvania County Extension Leadership Council assists in assessing the needs of the community and ensuring that those programming needs are met. Youth activities in agriculture are also promoted through the Pittsylvania County 4-H Livestock Club and the Pittsylvania Caswell Junior Livestock Show and Sale.
