The City of Portsmouth office of Virginia Cooperative Extension is your local connection to Virginia's land-grant universities, Virginia Tech and Virginia State University.

Through educational programs based on research and developed with input from local stakeholders, we help the people of City of Portsmouth improve their lives.

We provide education through programs in Agriculture and Natural Resources, Family and Consumer Sciences, 4-H Youth Development, and Community Viability.

Virginia Cooperative Extension takes pride in the premise that vital programming is based on the issues, problems, and needs of the people. A thorough analysis of the situation provides context for understanding and addressing these problems. Each local office updates their situation analysis every 4-5 years.

Language Interpretation Services Now Available

If you have limited English skills, do not let that stop you from visiting an Extension office. If you have difficulty speaking or understanding English, our staff can serve you by connecting you to one of our Extension agents through a telephone-based interpreter. Interpretation for more than 200 languages is provided. This service is free to our clients. Read more

2016 Junior 4-H Summer Camp

When: July 25-29, 2016

Where: Airfield 4-H Educational Center, Wakefield, VA.

Who: Portsmouth residents, 4-H club members, and students who are ages 9–13 as of January 1, 2016 (youth from surrounding cities are also welcome).

Cost: $245.00 per youth

Registration: Return the attached registration form and $40 non-refundable deposit by June 20, 2016. This will reserve your youth a space at camp. There will be a $50 fee on all returned checks.

Portsmouth program aims to help the homeless make the most of grocery store trips

A trip to the supermarket can be a real balancing act for some, especially when funds are limited and access to a kitchen is not always a given.

With thousands of choices lining the aisles and brightly colored fruit and vegetables piled high in the produce department, it can be confusing and slow trying to pick items for a balanced diet without going broke.

Virginia Cooperative Extension- City of Portsmouth office takes part of the Nationwide Cooperative Extension 100th Year Celebration. This was a collaborative effort involving our entire office: Unit Administrative Assistant, 4-H Youth Development Intern, Agriculture and Natural Resources/(Horticulture Agent) & Unit Coordinator & Master Gardeners, Family Nutrition Program Assistant, and Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent & Master Food Volunteers.
