Through educational programs based on research and developed with input from local stakeholders, we help the people of Powhatan County improve their lives.

We provide education through programs in Agriculture and Natural Resources, Family and Consumer Sciences, 4-H Youth Development, and Community Viability.

Language Interpretation Services Now Available

If you have limited English skills, do not let that stop you from visiting an Extension office. If you have difficulty speaking or understanding English, our staff can serve you by connecting you to one of our Extension agents through a telephone-based interpreter. Food Challenge

Addicted to cooking competition shows?  Looking to cultivate your culinary side?

This contest challenges teams of 4-H members to create a dish using only a predetermined set of ingredients. From these ingredients, team members must prepare a dish and make a presentation about it to the judges. Learn about cooking and nutrition, working as a team, and sharpening your communication skills in a fun, competitive setting! Teams will consist of 3-5 aspiring chefs, so sign up with friends or join a team.

A 4-H member is any boy or girl, age 5-18, who enrolls and participates in a planned sequence of related learning experiences for a minimum of six (6) hours under the guidance of Extension-trained volunteers or Extension staff members.

  • The 4-H year begins October 1 and ends September 30 annually.
  • To be eligible to participate in State 4-H competitions through Powhatan 4-H program, youth must be enrolled online in the project no later than January 1 to qualify.

Mini-Maker Festival

Young inventors & artists will make awesome projects through hands-on opportunities in Snap Circuits, Aerodynamics, Robots, Recycled Art, and more.

Local innovators and hobbyists will be on-site to demonstrate their creativity through STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math)

Powhatan 4-H and Powhatan Public Library are teaming up again for another exciting STEAM workshop highlighting:

Maker Activities and Adventures in STEAM Education

These workshops will offer a fun, safe, engaging and educational environment to learn, explore and build self-confidence while getting creative!

Junior 4-H Camp

Each summer Powhatan 4-H offers a one-week residential camp for youth ages 9-13 at the Jamestown 4-H Center. It is a great opportunity for campers to meet new friends, sing around the camp fire, experience canoeing, air rifles, marine science and much more. This year our camp will be held July 17-21.
