Master Tree Steward Course

Are you tired of purchasing plants for your yard or garden only to have them die? Are you an avid gardener and want to learn more about the urban and rural tree canopy? You may be interested in enrolling in the Tree Steward program.

Tree Stewards are trained community volunteers committed to promoting healthy urban and rural forests in Virginia. Tree Stewards provide training classes, educational programs, and projects in their communities intended to increase public awareness of the value of trees and tree care. With classroom training and hands-on practice, Tree Stewards are equipped to identify trees, counsel on tree selection, demonstrate proper tree planting and follow-up care, and guide removal of invasive plants that threaten trees.

All individuals interested in receiving Tree Steward Training must be able to commit 30 hours to the initial training in order to become certified. Tree Stewards who desire to remain active after completing their initial training must complete an annual recertification process. Recertification consists of 8 training and 10 service hours annually. This ensures that the Tree Stewards have the most up-to-date information.
